Active Learning Spaces

This room is DCS's most recent Active Learning Classrooms and utilizes a different design then our other ALCs.  Students sit may sit at twelve group tables that seat either seven or five and include power outlets. Students can also work at mobile and wall-mounted whiteboards. Meanwhile, the center table includes a Mac computer, HDMI connection, and document camera that are connected to a large central monitor and wall-mounted monitors throughout the room. Additionally, this space has a storage closet that faculty can use to store class materials.

This room is the larger of two large Active Learning Classrooms in Richard Weeks Hall designed for collaborative, group-based learning. Students sit at eight large tables of nine which have power outlets and wired connection points that can be used to send laptop, phone, or tablet images to a group monitor. Students can also work at wall-mounted whiteboards or at their tables using hand-held whiteboard tablets. Meanwhile, a height-adjustable central instructor station allows faculty to easily flow from table to table, lecture, or meet individually with students. The instructor hub includes all the sources available in our Digital Classroom Podium and is connected to each group monitor as well as two projectors and one monitor viewable on the front wall of the room . As a result, the instructor can send different images - including content the students have shared - to any one of the room's 11 displays.

As a result, the instructor can send different images - including content the students have shared - to any one of the room's five displays.

This room is one of two large Active Learning Classrooms in the brand new Academic Building designed for collaborative, group-based learning. Students sit at large tables of nine which have power outlets and wired connection points that can be used to send laptop, phone, or tablet images to a group monitor. Students can also work on wall-to-wall whiteboards or at their tables using hand-held whiteboard tablets. Rolling seats with bag and water bottle storage enables students to easily partner up and form different groups to engage in collaborative tasks.

Meanwhile, a height-adjustable central instructor station allows faculty to easily flow from table to table, lecture, or meet individually with students. The instructor hub includes all the sources available in our Digital Classroom Podium and is connected to each group monitor as well as four "jumbotron" monitors facing each side of the room from above the instructor station. As a result, the instructor can send their presentation material to any one of the room's 14 displays. Faculty can also preview or share student images from group monitors to any combination of the room's monitors.

This room utilizes a design similar to the other Active Learning Classrooms, but customized for smaller classes. Tillett 204 has tables of nine along the perimeter of the room, giving students access to whiteboard, outlets, and monitors. This room includes moveable whiteboard walls that slide over the rooms atrium windows to reveal more writing space or can be moved off of the windows to let in light. At their central station, instructor can send their own and student images to the group monitors and two wall-mounted screens. The tables that make up the instructor station can be raised or lowered so that the instructor can sit, stand, or even have students pull up stools to meet separate from the class.

This room is an Interactive Lecture Hall, a space designed to accommodate large lectures while also enabling group discussion. Tiered seating provides the traditional sightlines that are conducive to presenting for a large audience. However, each tier (or plateau) has two rows of tables and seats that are capable of swiveling 360 degrees, enabling students to form pairs or groups. In addition to the standard instructor technology included in the Digital Classroom Podium, this room also has Solstice wireless display sharing. With Solstice, the instructor and students can project images from their laptop, phone, or tablet - facilitating the sharing of content from anywhere in the room, without the need to stand at the podium and connect the device with wires.

This room is an Interactive Lecture Hall designed to accommodate large lectures and group work. Tiered seating provides the traditional sightlines that are conducive to presenting for a large audience. However, the seating is divided into sections that each have table space and rolling chairs that students can use to cluster for group work. Each section has table microphones, power outlets, and laptop connections so that students can be heard and share their work from their tables. Additionally, each section are separated by whiteboard walls which students can use as they work. Finally, the rooms three, large projector screens allow the instructor to display images that can be viewed while students cluster or allow sections of the room to each use a screen

There are several rooms that do not have the features to qualify as official Active Learning Spaces that are still conducive to collaboration, team-based learning, and other methods of active learning. These rooms typically have tables and moveable seating that allow students to cluster in groups. These rooms might also have extra writing surfaces for student work or Solstice Wireless Display Sharing that can be used to collaborate or report out to the rest of the class.
